The rare bundled proteins isolated from blue-green algae (spirulina platensis) called Phycocyanin, results in the vivid blue pigmented powder that we all love. Phycocyanin has recently come under the spotlight in the field of drug research for exhibiting a wide range of pharmacological effects. Researchers are still learning and testing its viability to inhibit lipid peroxidation (antioxidant), improve lymphocyte activity, induce healthy apoptosis, and/or demonstrate overall immune system support.
